And she won!Survivor's Jeff Probst: How I would win the game"It was a very quiet game you played. What was the key?" host Jeff Probst asked her during the live finale Sunday."I think that right away I started sussing people out," she answered. I just worked within that ... and got to the end."Clarke may very well be $1 million richer, but she says the game itself is what's affected her the most. Carlos Alvarez/Getty Images Thelegal dispute betweenGossip GirlstarLeighton Meesterand her mother appears to be over. What started out as a battle over the alleged misuse of the actress' money, and then turned into a dispute over whether Constance Meester deserved compensation for a purported role in helping guide her daughter's career, has suddenly made an abrupt halt. The holidays might be a little less rancorous for the Meester family this year after a judge last week accepted Constance's decision to bow down. As a result, Leighton is being allowed to obtain a default judgment against her mother.our editor recommendsInside the Strange Legal Battle Between 'Gossip Girl' Star Leighton Meester and Her Mother (Analysis)Former 'Gossip Girl' Intern Progressing After Losing Hand in Propeller Accident (Video)'Chuck,' 'Gossip Girl' EPs Adapting UK TV Hit, 'Misfits''Gossip Girl,' 'Vampire Diaries' Go to Netflix Under Four-Year Streaming Licensing Deal with CW PHOTOS: The CW's Fall Premiere Party As you'll recall, Leighton Meester first sued her mother in Los Angeles Superior Court in July. In the original complaint, Leighton said that she had sent her mother $7,500 each month to help with her brother's medical expenses, but that Constance had used the money for cosmetic procedures, including plastic surgery, hair extensions and Botox. A few days later, Constance hit back with counterclaims totaling $3 million in damages. Mommy Meester claimed that she had "sacrificed her happiness" to support Leighton's acting career and that her daughter had breached various management, support, and settlement agreements. The money that was being sent her way was contractually owed, according to Constance. Specifically, Constance argued that she was the president of Intentional Productions, Inc., which rendered Leighton's acting services. She noted her signature was on documents that established the company. Additionally, Constance told of an oral agreement that she had made with Leighton's attorney, Marty Singer, to testify in prior litigation between the actress and her former talent agency, Abrams Artist Agency. For her testimony, Constance alleged that she was promised $10,000 per month in support payments. PHOTOS: The CW's New Fall TV Shows In August, the daughter filed a demurrer that ridiculed her mother's claims. Leighton said that IPI was merely a "loan-out" company for employment purposes and wasn't indicative that Constance was playing the role of manager. TheGossip Girlstar also said that the supposed oral contract made by Singer was void because it's illegal to bargain for testimony to win a lawsuit. Finally, daughter said that mother couldn't sue for "dependent adult financial abuse" because if it was really the case that the traditional mother-daughter roles had been flipped, Constance would require a guardian to sue on her behalf. Constance has now backed off. Last month, her attorneys told the court that Constance no longer wishes to defend against Leighton's claims. The mother also submitted a motion to withdraw her Answer and all the claims alleging how she had sacrificed her happiness for Leighton's good. On Wednesday, a judge made an order striking Constance's answer to the lawsuit and letting Leighton obtain a default judgement. In Leighton's' original lawsuit, the actress sought a declaration there was no contractual relationship between the parties. The mother will soon no longer be able to claim any of those Gossip Girl riches. Switzerlands Copyright Law To Remain In Neutral, Surprising Anti-Piracy Groups
With different new set of the impact of unauthorized downloads, Europe appears to become saying “if it ain’t broke, don’t repair it.” The research, launched through the Federal Department of Justice and Police, has came to the conclusion that piracy does not have an adverse economic effect on the country and suggests the current legislation, which enables for copyrighted material to become downloaded for private use, is enough. Chris Marcich, leader from the Film Association, Europe, informs me it’s an unexpected and disappointing result. In the analysis (simply with different year-old Nederlander study since the marketplaces offer a similar experience), a federal council discovered that as much as one-third of Swiss older than 15 download movies, music and games free of charge which most don't separate downloads which are legal and individuals that aren't. Most compelling for that authors from the study, however, seems to become that customers of file-discussing sites continue to be investing cash on entertainment and also the savings they realize by installing free submissions are consequently being allocated to movie tickets and games. As the council thinks that it's particularly the large foreign production companies who are suffering from — and will need to adjust to — new consumer habits, it does not believe these downloads may have an adverse effect on Switzerlands own cultural output. Marcich states, “It’s troubling to allow them to apparently base their conclusion on that kind of reasoning. The phenomenon affects all nations.” Local film and music producer Adriano Vigano can also be a lawyer for that countrys anti-piracy association and informs me: The Swiss government states it is not so concerned about piracy since it only affects foreign rightsholders. Thats a hostile statement. Especially, he notes, since foreign films have about 95% share of the market in Europe. Anti-piracy groups, political figures and artists are mobilizing to find the government to gather more data, states Vigano.

Washington fetes five
Kennedy Center hailed, clockwise from top left, Yo-Yo Ma, Meryl Streep, Neil Diamond, Barbara Cook and Sonny Rollins with a series of events.
The nation's capital embraced five titans of the performing arts Sunday night at the 34th annual Kennedy Center Honors, this city's premiere gathering of political and entertainment nobility. Actor Meryl Streep, jazz legend Sonny Rollins, pop icon Neil Diamond, singer/thesp Barbara Cook and cellist Yo-Yo Ma were celebrated in a typically energetic affair that will be broadcast on CBS Dec. 27.As usual, the production at the center's Concert Hall and following gala capped a busy weekend for honorees that included a White House reception, a dinner at the U.S. State Department and other events. Honorees watching from the presidential box alongside President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama were treated to segments on each that featured film biographies and entertainment by artists whose identities remained a closely guarded secret. The salute to Streep kicked off the affair, hosted by chum Tracey Ullman. Among colleagues who sang her praises were director Mike Nichols and actors Robert DeNiro, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, Kevin Kline and Stanley Tucci. The Honors event ended a busy week in D.C. for Streep, who earlier met with numerous female members of Congress to campaign for a National Woman's History Museum and screened her new film, "The Iron Lady."Nichols, who directed Streep in "Silkwood," "Postcards From the Edge," "Heartburn" and "Angels in America," marveled at her ability to envelop her characters. "She can handle any part thrown at her except maybe Gidget," he said. "She's the definition of versatility, which makes her a nightmare as a dinner partner. One night I was sitting next to Tess of the D'Ubervilles. On another, Eva Braun. Who will she be tonight? A winner definitely."The tribute to saxophonist Sonny Rollins, hosted by former honoree Bill Cosby, included an exceptional array of jazz greats. They included pianist/composer/band leader Herbie Hancock, sax players Benny Golson and Jimmy Heath, drummer Jack DeJohnette and bassist Christian McBride. A second combo featured saxophonists Joe Lovano and Ravi Coltrane, drummer Billy Drummond and bassist Christian McBride. An equally impressive talent lineup saluted singer Cook, the former Broadway ingenue ("Candide," "The Music Man") who continues to perform at age 84. The tribute led by Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick included entertainers Glenn Close, Patti LuPone, Audra McDonald, Laura Osnes, Sutton Foster, Kelli O'Hara and Rebecca Luker. As expected, The segment for singer/composer Diamond, hosted by John Lithgow, featured a rousing medley of hits. Led by the Rob Mathes Band, participants included Smokey Robinson, Lionel Richie, Jennifer Nettles and The Sweet Carolines. The tribute to cellist Ma ended the show in decidedly unpredictable fashion. It began with a light-hearted tribute by comedian Stephen Colbert and finished with a collage of musical genres emceed by Muppet Elmo (Kevin Clash), in a setting dubbed "Yo-Yo's Playground."The segment was aimed at demonstrating the remarkable versatility of the musical genius and tireless educator. Following a performance of Schuman's "Piano Quintet in E-flat major, Op 44" by an all-star ensemble, composer and former honoree John Williams conducted an assembly of musical groups that included bluegrass and Ma's Silk Road Project. A rousing finale featured singer James Taylor performing a choir-backed "Here Comes the Sun."In its third decade, the Kennedy Center Honors continues to impress both in the consistency of its anointed honorees and participating talent, and its status as this city's hottest ticket for audiences, artists and politicos.Perhaps even more impressive is the longevity of the Honors weekend as a Stevens family affair. It was George Stevens Jr. who first conjured up the idea of the annual awards fund-raiser and who has produced it ever since with colleagues that now include son Michael. It remains a perfect fit for the flexible impresario able to leverage unique ties to Hollywood and D.C.Yet as Stevens honchos the Honors production with longtime partner CBS, his wife Liz has overseen since day one an equally revered event - the previous evening's private dinner for some 200 artists, donors and honorees past and present at the State Department's posh diplomatic reception rooms hosted by the U.S. Secretary of State. It's an unenviable task for some poor Kennedy Center official to say, "sorry," each year to VIPs who simply can't be accommodated."You're not just the 1 percent for getting in this room tonight, you're the .0001 percent," said Kennedy Center Chairman David Rubenstein. "So congratulate yourself for getting invited to this dinner." He wasn't kidding. Among attendees was Russian philanthropist Vladimir Potanin, who had just donated $5 million to the Kennedy Center.Honorees receive their festive ribbons in tableside ceremonies following the dinner. On hand were Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who dashed back to D.C. between diplomatic missions to attend the event. She was accompanied by her husband, former President Bill Clinton, a not-so-renowned sax player who personally offered the evening's tribute to "colleague" Rollins.Singer Renee Fleming emceed the after-dinner remarks, noting that each of this year's honorees are "still at the top of their games." Singer Audra McDonald praised Cook for being a "selfless mentor to me and many others," while songwriter Alan Bergman saluted honoree Diamond. Actor Bill Irwin extemporized about honoree Ma. "He's not only an extraordinary experimenter, he's a stud muffin," he said.Writer/director Nora Ephron ended her effusive praise for honoree Streep with the evening's best line. "I'm sorry to tell you this, Madame Secretary," she said to Clinton after listing Streep's impressive resume of important female roles. "When you met with her tonight, and I imagine you thought she was charming, she was just soaking you up. Someday, you will see her in a movie about your life and discover the mortifying truth that she is better at you than you are." Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com
The Most Popular TV Origin Tales
Michael C. Hall , Tom Welling On Sunday, Syfy will fly audiences to Neverland having a two-evening miniseries that explores how Peter Pan (Charlie Rowe), Captain Hook (Rhys Ifans), and Neverland itself found be. Hollywood's never been afraid to inform a great origin story - for better (Batman Starts, X-Males Top Class) or worse (the 3 The Exorcist prequels, Hannibal Rising) - and also the trend is equally as popular around the small screen. Behold, a lot of our favorite TV origin tales:1. Clark Kent, SmallvilleAt 10 seasons lengthy, this series about Superman's upbringing among humans is possibly a long origin story ever. Carrying out a strict "no tights, no plane tickets" rule, the series started as search for a higher school-aged Clark Kent who struggles to be prepared for his alien roots and superhuman capabilities in Smallville, Kansas. During the period of the show, bits of the Superman mythology fell into position: Clark visited work on The Daily Planet, other Electricity Comics heroes and villains put their hands up, and Clark (finally!) wound up with Lois Lane. And, yes, in the series' finish, Clark eventually donned the Super-suit and required his first official flight because the Guy of Steel.2. Dexter Morgan, DexterAlthough it had been revealed more like a general mythology, Dexter Morgan's bloody backstory is vital to understanding his serial-killing ways. Orphaned at age 3 after his mother's murder, Dexter was discovered inside a pool of bloodstream by officer and eventual adoptive father Harry Morgan. Realizing Dexter's penchant for killing neighborhood pets, Harry reined in Dexter's "Dark Passenger" by teaching him "The Code." The short version: Killing is awesome, as lengthy because the body's responsible for his very own serious crimes. That is probably not the very best raising a child, but it is provided us with several seasons of scrumptious drama. So thanks, Harry! 3. Gustavo Fring, Breaking BadIn Season 4's "Hermanos," we finally discover why Gus is really darned hostile toward the cartel: They wiped out hispartner (lover?)Max. Inside a tense, taut, all-in-The spanish language flashback to eighties Mexico, we learn that Gus and Max started cooking meth quietly in order to partner track of the cartel. However when Don Eladio does not agree to their subterranean shenanigans and since Gus is in some way "connected" in Chile, Max will get shot within the mind and Gus needs to look at his partner bleed to dying. His Chilean connection opted for him towards the grave, but a minimum of we all know how Gus grew to become probably the most callous meth kingpin/chicken guy from the Southwest.4. Mr. Eko, LostOn a show where everyone were built with a crazy backstory, Mr. Eko's was one of the more interesting. A number of flashbacks says a youthful Eko wiped out a guy to safeguard his brother Yemi in the same fate whenever a gang of guerrillas terrorize his Nigerian village. The gang recruits Eko, who returns home years later like a courageous drug the almighty to request pressure Yemi, that has since be a priest, to assist him smuggle heroin in Virgin Mary statues. Throughout the operation, Yemi is shot because the plane will take off and Eko, who's outfitted like a priest, is mistaken for his brother. He is constantly on the function as the village priest from guilt. No surprise the man does not talk much!5. Noah "HRG" Bennett, HeroesLate in the first season, Heroes abandoned its multi-story format to pay attention to just one character: Noah "HRG" Bennett. As they and the family are held hostage at their Texas home, the show flashes-to HRG's recruitment by Primatech, his adoption of Claire, and the (presumed) murder of his former partner Claude. Even though episode strengthened that HRG was confident with the morally grey areas, it mostly demonstrated what lengths HRG visits safeguard his "Claire Bear," whose forces he'd stored secret from the organization from fear they would take her away. All of a sudden, all his evil functions did not appear so evil - particularly when he sacrificed themself to ensure that Claire could escape.6. Olivia Dunham, FringeAlthough Fringe's first season says Olivia used to be one of the 30 children Walter and William Bell accustomed to test the drug Cortexiphan, it had not been until Season 2's "The city of jacksonville" that people learned the implications of individuals tests. Facing the threat that certain from the structures within this universe's NY will quickly be ripped to the alternate world, Walter discloses that Olivia had the energy to find out which objects did not belong here simply because they glimmered. After a number of unsuccessful tests, Olivia finally regains the energy over time in order to save the ordinary people for the reason that business building. But more to the point, she starts to see that Peter also offers the tell-tale glimmer, which, coincidentally, teed up another origin story! What exactly are your faves?

Gary Busey On Piranha 3DD
Overflowing cows, dragons and 'Buseyisms'You might have observed that yesterday was Thanksgiving in america, meaning Hollywood is today sleeping off a poultry coma instead of creating movie news. But have no fear, neophiles! We are able to today provide you with a small nugget of news on Piranha 3DD, in the inimitable Gary Busey and also the new problem of Empire. You will see the way i treat one of these.InchSo that's removed that up then. The coming year he's also likely to to produce book known as Buseyisms, filled with the acronyms he's been creating since 1999. "'NASCAR' means Non-Sports Sport Centred AroundRednecks. 'SOBER' is Boy Of the Bitch, Everything's Real'" Etc. Your dominant eye is most likely your left. That is what you naturally keep open while you are shooting a gun."His suggestion for any follow-up feature: "Bring me to your country and we'll do a unique interview for Empire magazine where Gary Busey picks several people to create a Buttplug Patrol and we'll venture out at beginning and buttplug some cows."Piranha 3DDis out the coming year.Whilst gary Busey could be been told by at more length within this month's Empire, within an interview that's as near to some must-read as we have ever released.Dark night Increases Covers

Cameron Crowe Once Fired Ashton Kutcher; Was Planning Marvin Gaye Biopic With Will Smith
The last time Cameron Crowe directed a movie, it was 2005's 'Elizabethtown,' a bust that was panned by critics and audiences with equal fervor. Would things have been different if Ashton Kutcher was the star instead of Orlando Bloom? Probably not, but that didn't stop Crowe from first courting the '70's Show' star for the role, only to fire him later on. In this week's issue of The Hollywood Reporter, the director admitted to being frustrated with Kutcher after casting him, eventually replacing him with someone else. When he cast Ashton Kutcher in Elizabethtown. Kutcher was then still part of 'That 70's Show,' and Crowe told him he had to set aside a few weeks to focus only on the film. But sources involved with the project say Kutcher didn't heed Crowe's words. Although he promised he would deliver when the cameras were rolling, Crowe lost faith... "I'll spend months working with an actor, and I think I spent four months with Ashton," Crowe says. "At a certain point, it's like, 'This is not meant to be.'" Oof, poor Ashton isn't having the best week, is he? Crowe also spoke to THR about his upcoming film, 'We Bought a Zoo,' and how he wooed -- and, unlike Kutcher, stuck with -- Matt Damon for the lead. It started when Crowe first visited the set of 'True Grit,' where he gave Damon a mix CD (of course) and a copy of the 1983 movie 'Local Hero,' which had a plot similar to 'Zoo.' Damon was initially hesitant about signing onto a film that could turn into a Disney version of the book it was based on (written by Benjamin Mee), but Crowe didn't want to make a project like that either. According to the actor, "Crowe said: 'I know what you're going to be afraid of; the bad version of this movie is really a movie you don't want to be in. That's what I'm afraid of too." Then, after listening to Crowe's mix CD, Damon eventually had a change of heart. You can read more about the making of 'We Bought a Zoo,' a track-by-track listing of the CD Crowe gave Damon and the canned Marvin Gaye biopic starring Will Smith (not sure what to think about that) that the director tried to make, over on THR. 'We Bought a Zoo' hits theaters on December 23, 2011. [via THR] [Photo: WireImage] Follow Moviefone on Twitter Like Moviefone on Facebook

Actor Alan Fudge dies at 67
Character actor Alan Fudge, best known for recurring roles in TV series including "Man From Atlantis," "Eischied" "Paper Dolls" and, most recently, "7th Heaven," died Oct. 10 in Los Angeles of lung and liver cancer, which he had been fighting for about a year. He was 67.Fudge amassed almost 140 smallscreen credits over the course of 37 years in addition to roles in 17 films including "Capricorn One," "Chapter Two," "The Border," "Brainstorm," "The Natural" (he played Robert Redford's father but had no lines) and "Edward Scissorhands."Writer-producer Graham Yost said of Fudge: "Personally, Alan was one of the most generous, kind and caring men I have ever known. Many of the roles he played over the years reflected that side of him. And then there were the roles where he got to go really dark and twisted -- those were the roles that made all of us who knew him smile and applaud. He was a great actor and a great man."Fudge was born in Wichita, Kan., and moved to Tucson, Ariz., with his family at age 5. He graduated from the U. of Arizona, where he was a theater major. In 1962-63 he was a member of Tucson folk music group the Ash Alley Singers. Later he moved to NY and became a member of the APA repertory troupe, appearing in a number of mostly small roles on Broadway from 1967-69, including in productions of "You Can't Take It With You," "The Cherry Orchard" and "Hamlet."The actor made his smallscreen debut in a 1972 episode of "Gunsmoke" and worked steadily in the medium for the better part of four decades. Crawford; he played Det. Commissioner Kimbrough on NBC crime drama "Eischied" (1979), starring Joe Don Baker. In another recurring stint, he played Dr. Van Adams in ABC's fashion-industry sudser "Paper Dolls" (1984). In the 1992-93 CBS crime drama "Bodies of Evidence," which starred Lee Horsley and George Clooney, Fudge played Chief Frank Leland. None of these proved to be long-running series, however.Fudge had recurring roles on "Dynasty" and "L.A. Law," but the actor appeared so frequently on television that it was not uncommon for him to appear multiple times on a series in different roles, as he did on "Hawaii Five-O," "Lou Grant," "The A-Team," "Columbo" and "Murder, She Wrote."Fudge also appeared in many telepics, including "The Blue Knight," "Children of An Lac" and "I Know My First Name Is Steven."He made his last bigscreen appearance in the Coen brothers' 2001 film "The Man Who Wasn't There."Fudge continued to work steadily until 2009, a year in which he guested in episodes of "Big Love," "The Closer" and "The Office" and appeared in the Hallmark Channel telepic "Relative Stranger."He is survived by his wife, Kathy; a son and two daughters; and a grandson. I'll hum a few notes and discover if these appear familiar for you personally: "Blue Velvet" (1986): David Lynch uses the 1963 Bobby Vinton song to surreal effect, in Isabella Rossellini's performance from this just like a troubled lounge singer too as with Dennis Hopper's evocation from this since the substance abuser who torments her for his or her own twisted benefit. That scene through which Kyle MacLachlan hides inside the closet and watches with fascination their sadomasochistic relationship plays out before him can be as disturbing today because back in the day the film showed up in this area two-and-a-half decades ago. "Boys Don't Cry" (1999): Somewhat-known Hilary Swank won her first Academy Award for top actress on her behalf daring and demanding portrayal of Brandon Teena, an authentic-existence transgendered teen who was simply raped and wiped out in Nebraska in 1993. Swank were living for just about any month like a guy to arrange for your role, cutting her hair and tape lower her breasts. But another Costello song, "Shipbuilding," does incorporated within an impressive soundtrack. John Cusack reaches his analytical, lovesick best, and Jack Black gave the manic comic performance that made him a star. "Dazed and Confused" (1993): The Introduced Zeppelin song that inspired the title doesn't appear anywhere in Richard Linklater's ensemble comedy, which follows several secondary school juniors by themselves last day's class in 1976, together with the incoming freshmen that are suffering through all the ritualistic hazing. Nevertheless the soundtrack comes filled with hits within the era, including "Stone All Nite" by Hug, "Slow Ride" by Foghat and "School's Out" by Alice Cooper. The cast of gifted then-unknowns includes Film Clip, Parker Posey and Matthew McConaughey. "Pretty in Pink" (1986): The 1981 Psychedelic Real real furs tune was an inspiration for author-director John Hughes, as well as the band re-recorded it for inclusion here. Sunny (Sseo-ni)
A CJ Entertainment presentation from the Toilet Pictures, Aloha Pictures production. (Worldwide sales: CJ Entertainment, Seoul.) Produced by Ahn Byung-ki, Ahn In-ki. Executive producer, Katherine Kim. Co-producer, Lee An-na. Directed, put together by Kang Hyoung-chul.With: Yu Ho-jeong, Jin Hui-gyeong, Shim Eun-gyeong, Gang So-ra, Park Jin-ju, Kim Bo-mi, Kim Min-yeong, Nam Bo-ra, Min Hyo-rin, Goh Su-hui, Kim Seon-gyeong.As perfect generally day's sunshine, Korean femme-centric ensembler "Sunny" can be a warm ray of movement picture light that leads to pleasure and tears in equal measure. Ably mixing the arrival-of-age and middle age crisis genres, Kang Hyoung-chul's sophomore effort plays something such as a far more potent, better Korean version of Hollywood weepie "From time to time" (1995). Its socko local haul of $47 million won't be surpassed offshore, nevertheless the film could glow worldwide, since it explores issues familiar to auds everywhere, although getting a definite kimchi flavor. (Korean dialogue) Pic's pivotal character is Im Na-mi (Yu Ho-jeong), first met just like a well-to-do, taken-for-granted housewife who accidentally finds out that her high-school friend Chun-hwa (Jin Hui-gyeong) remains make the hospital with terminal cancer. Thrilled doing old buddy again, Chun-hwa demands that Na-mi obtain former teen gang -- known with one another as Sunny -- back together again for just about any reunion before Chun-hwa dies they have got to behave fairly quickly, since Chun-hwa isn't likely to reside greater than two several days longer.. Na-mi sets to satisfy Chun-hwa's wish by checking in first getting an old teacher. As Na-mi walks up the method to her old-fashioned, Kang relies on a 360-degree pan to leap back two-and-a-half decades for the eighties, when teenage country bumpkin Na-mi (now carried out by Shim Eun-gyeong) was the completely new kid at her Seoul secondary school. The flashback allows the script presenting the whole Sunny crew: feisty youthful Chun-hwa (Gang So-ra), who always had more belief in Na-mi's talents than she ever did foul-mouthed Jin-hui (Park Jin-ju) pretty airhead Bok-hui (Kim Bo-mi) overweight, plastic surgery-obsessed Jang-mi (Kim Min-yeong) violent bookworm Geom-ok (Nam Bo-ra) and too-awesome-for-school ambitious fashion model Su-ji (Min Hyo-rin). Each is charmed to various levels by Na-mi's honest if awkward style. The film cycles forward and backward between past and provide very easily, handling the seven protags (elevated by two) together with a lot of subsidiary figures without ever losing its balance or momentum. While tissue needs to be launched at cinema exit entrance doors, it's the pic's robust humor that puts the hook in. Kang's script handles to supply up a deft depiction of teenybopper existence while perfectly using the quick changes that have transformed Columbia formerly thirty years. Pic's fabulous and funny focus can be a downtown standoff between Sunny together with an adversary distaff gang, their fight coinciding by getting a panic attack around the left-wing demonstration by Korea's Fifth Republic militia. Set to "Touch by Touch" (a track by Austrian group Pleasure, a eighties Korean pop sensation), and happening underneath a theater placard for your anti-communist-designed "Rocky 4," this amusing but breathtaking sequence reps a showpiece for your technical expertise Kang demonstrates throughout. Pic's teen thesps are evenly terrific. Likewise, the thesps who play their grown-up options heartwarmingly embody the mistakes of grownups whose dreams were unfulfilled. Supporting cast may also be perfect. Clever lensing by Lee Hyung-deok capitalizes round the superb production type of Lee Years of age-han, which contrasts the monochromatic sophistication of contempo corporate Seoul while using bubble-gum pop colors in the eighties. Version caught within the Busan fest will be a director's cut that clocked in at 11 minutes a lot more than the version first released commercial in Columbia in August. Versions include more vivid teacher-triggered violence plus much more profanity from Jin-hui than was thought commercial viable. At press time, a little of music applied to the director's cut soundtrack, including Cyndi Lauper's "Over And Over," had not been removed for worldwide play.Camera (color, widescreen), Lee Hyung-deok editor, Nam Na-youthful music, Kim Jun-seok production designer, Lee Years of age-han costume designer, Chae Kyung-hwa appear (Dolby Digital), Lee Seung-yup. Examined at Busan Film Festival (Korean Cinema Today), March. 13, 2011. Running time: 135 MIN. Contact the number newsroom at news@variety.com

Is Sam Mendes Axing the Action in 'Bond 23'?
For years, reporters have been asking Roland Emmerich -- director of 'Independence Day' and '2012' -- why he has such a fascination with blowing up the planet (I even gave it a shot once, too), which is usually met with a downplayed answer about it all being a coincidence. Or something like that. Then -- while discussing his new movie about Shakespeare -- Emmerich offered this, almost in passing: "I always have the feeling that our whole culture is like a lot of lemmings... and pretty soon it will all be over." Honestly, has there ever been a sentence to better describe Roland Emmerich's motivations than that? Oh, yes, then there's his new "Shakespeare was a fraud" movie opening in some markets this weekend, 'Anonymous.' In the drama, William Shakespeare (played quite terrifically by Rafe Spall) is actually a buffoon, selected to pose as the author of some of the greatest plays in history that were actually written by Edward de Vere (Rhys Ifans), 17th Earl of Oxford -- a theory Emmerich says is "plausible." Moviefone spoke to Emmerich about 'Anonymous,' the challenges of making a mostly CGI world look realistic, and why 'Anonymous' looks better than the 'Star Wars' prequels. Last time I spoke to you it was for '2012' -- it's a very different movie this time around. Really? OK, I'm game: How do you think they are similar? I think they are kind of twins. [Laughs] No, actually. I'm going to quote you on that now. Honestly, though: How does Roland Emmerich make this movie? Don't forget, my next movie is typical Roland Emmerich ['Singularity'] -- and another one after that. I think, for me, it's good, once in a while, to do something that is important for me. Just to reconnect. It's much smaller and less pressure and I could do what I wanted. And to go back to Germany for the first time in 20 years and work with incredibly talented people there, because I always believe that German crews are, actually, in a weird way, the best -- especially when you speak German. So, all around it was a personal movie for me. So it's different than filming, say, '2012.' When you do these big movies, it's a little bit like being a general in a war or the executive of a big company. You're not quite down and dirty. In the end, what happens around the camera and the actors is exactly the same. There's no difference. So did you enjoy making this movie more than your movies with explosions? I liked the intimacy. Even in my big movie, I actually like shooting dialogues the most and working with actors. I actually look on the schedule and I go, "Oh, God," when there's an action scene on the schedule. But when there's dialogue on the shooting schedule, I'm like, I can't wait to do it. Why do the action movie then? Because I like it... it's not like I'm miserable or anything. But if that's the part that you don't enjoy... I'm not miserable... and I have a very good hand with it and keeping these tedious moments in front of a blue screen and stuff that's lively and fun. I feel a director is an animator -- we should all have training at Club Med so we can get better at that. Because it's a lot about motivation and keeping acting fresh in tedious situations. What I always find fascinating is how movies influence one another. For example: when I was shooting '2012,' I shot a lot in front of blue screen. And I realized, using digital cameras, the digital compositing is so much better than anything I have ever seen. So I thought, Oh my God, I can actually do whole scenes in front of blue screen. And it's relatively simple and easy to composite. So we shot the scenes and it looked really good and convincing, so I said, "Why don't we use this in our Shakespeare movie?" Here's what I don't understand: If I watch 'Revenge of the Sith,' it's pretty obvious that whole movie is CGI. I didn't feel that way with 'Anonymous.' Why is that? Because I think we worked a little bit harder than they do. It's a different kind of movie, you don't care. Also, you forget, George Lucas has to make three and a half thousand shots and we have, maybe, in a movie like 'Anonymous,' between four and five hundred. That's a big difference. And I think I have somebody who just likes, like me, realism. It's always how much you like something or don't like something. And I think whenever you feel composited, it's not a good shot -- there are a lot of tricks where you can make it look less like a composite. There's always this talk that one day special effects will help make movies cheaper -- and it never happens like that. But in the case of 'Anonymous,' it was the first movie that visual effects made it look bigger but was half as expensive. Were you worried it wasn't going to look real? Yeah, you're always afraid of that. And we cut five or six shots out because they didn't live up to the rest. Shifting gears, were you aware of this Shakespeare conspiracy before you did this movie? Not at all. Not until the script. I really wasn't either, but -- after looking into it -- there are quite a few different versions. Well... there's only one really serious theory right now, of the Earl of Oxford. His whole life is too good of a match and he blows every other candidate out of the water. Also, he was a writer, he had an acting group, he invested in theaters. He had an annual salary for the last ten years of his life from Elizabeth, who was extremely stingy. So there was a lot of evidence there. So you think it's true? Well, for me, I would say it's very plausible that it was Oxford. But I'm 100 percent sure that it wasn't the man from Stratford. There's too much evidence there that proves he wasn't. Do you worry people will judge this movie based on your other disaster movies? There are a lot of things against this movie. First of all, I'm "the Master of Disaster" -- that's my official title. Then, naturally, there is the literary establishment. For them they will absolutely fight this movie and try to belittle it -- which is always happening to movies that want people to think. So there will be a big battle going on. And that's all fine, but I think we made a great movie and we stand for it and whatever happens, happens. We can't control it, you know? You should have released this movie anonymously. I wanted to. But you could not do that. The studio only gave me the money because they could sell it under my name. See, that would have really shocked people when you made your eventual big reveal that is was you. But it's a little bit like that, too, because people are just stunned that it is from me. They're always saying, "How difficult is it to make this movies that I normally do? Do you think you could be brain damaged doing these movies?" It's just like all public perception. It's the same thing that happens to Michael Bay and people like that. Everybody thinks we're kind of idiots. That's a strong word. I don't think even the people who don't like your movies thinks that you're an idiot. Good [laughs]. I have to come back to this: You did say that you don't look forward to the action shots and you like dialogue. Why not just do more movies like this? It's not that. What I want to stay away from in the future is disaster films -- fewer disaster films. And I just kind of want to make... I love making these movies. Also, you know what, it's the movies I love the most. I see a great, entertaining movie -- a big, entertaining movie -- and it's such a joy for me to see it. Like the first 'Pirates of the Caribbean' was one of those. And the first 'Back to the Future' was one of those. The first 'Star Wars' was one of those. So that's what I'm truing to aspire to and that's why I make movies. But, I kind of also have other interests. For example: I'm a huge history buff, I love to read biographies, I'm very into reading and I never watch TV or anything and I'm hardly on the computer. So, in a way, it's another Roland Emmerich. And I have the smallest problem with it; I think everybody else has a problem with it. But people who know me see 'Anonymous,' and say, "Yeah, totally vintage Roland." How so? I'm a very inquisitive person. I think inquisitiveness is lost in our culture. I always have the feeling that our whole culture is like a lot of lemmings... and pretty soon it will all be over. Eliminate: Archie Cookson
A Realtor Pictures production. (Worldwide sales: Seven & Seven, London.) Produced by Ioanna Karavella. Executive producer, David Bunker. Directed, put together by Make the most of Holder. With: Paul Rhys, Claire Skinner, Paul Ritter, Georgia King, Ewan Stewart, Nicholas Day, Phillip Manikum, Richard Cambridge, Freddy Downham, Juan Herrera, Gabriel Vick, Marc Danbury. An ambitious Brit indie that does less than fulfill the anticipation it boosts, "Eliminate: Archie Cookson" starts just like a droll sad-sack spin on spy spoofery, but with the finish has moved from comedy toward a dramatic heft its spindly legs can't support. That is one awkward tonal mix ultimately produces an offbeat curio instead of a completely satisfying balancing, d.p.-switched-author-helmer Make the most of Holder's debut feature remains a pointing harbinger of better attempt to come. Offshore home-format sales look likely. Title figure (Paul Rhys, within the first bigscreen lead since 2002's "Food of affectionInch) can be a failure by any standard, particularly individuals of his ex-wife, Camilla (Claire Skinner). Once an Intelligence Dept. up-and-comer, he's now slunk sufficiently lower the ladder to help keep his position -- nowadays simply office effort -- solely due to pitying, influential in-laws and regulations and rules. While former spouse and horribly precocious boy Hector (Freddy Downham) still occupy tony digs and social status, Archie stays nights consuming within the dreary flat, days sleepwalking through Russian-to-British translation duties. He's literally asleep at the office (rejected from sight inside an audio transcription booth) when assassins with silencers gun lower his co-employees over some missing old Cold War audiotapes that could compromise the integrity of government, additionally to 2 senior citizens gentlemen spymasters (Philip Manikum, Nicholas Day). The Two coolly determine that Archie -- who is now offering the incriminating reels within the possession -- must die too, dispatching veteran Ennis (Paul Burns) to accomplish the deed. Consider Ennis and Archie were co-employees in better days, Ennis gives him 24 several hours to return the items and hopefully save their very own existence. Naturally, everything does not go as planned, though once "Eliminate" turns into a comparatively straightforward espionage film, its financial and imaginative limitations be apparent. What starts out just like a dry sendup of "The Spy Who Showed up Within the Cold"-type mellers evolves continuously less comedy, with no emotional weight or clever, suspenseful twists needed to within the narrative ante. Particularly, the film takes too seriously the protag's associations with Camilla and new squeeze Lucy (Georgia King), an extremely ditzy bombshell of suspect loyalties. The finale flirts with tragedy, nevertheless the lightweight pic can't handle it. You will discover enough appealing elements here to produce one desire a remake that correctly balances the seriocomedy, ideally hewing more toward the ironic, satirical tenor David Hamill's score (breezily nodding to '60s genre photos) keeps throughout. Holder demonstrates a sure hands along with his accomplished cast, a enjoyable feeling of deadpan scene pacing, plus an ease while using bricks-and-mortar areas of developing a modest enterprise appear just like a more costly one. Rhys is certainly watchable, nevertheless the show is rather well stolen by Burns, whose American-outlined friendly foe enhances fair-to-good material getting a really funny combination of deep-dyed cynicism and unforeseen hominess.Camera (color, HD), Stein Stie editor, Valentina Riva music, David Hamill production designer, Nicola Dietmann art director, Tanya Burns costume designer, Amanda Hambleton appear, Daniel Chu Owen appear designers, Mark Kenna, Alex Hudd visual effects supervisor, James Cost assistant director, Simon Haveland casting, Camilla Evans. Live-Action Akira Green Lit; Garrett Hedlund Rumored Front-Runner
The long-gestating live-action adaptation of the popular manga and anime tale Akira has been resuscitated at Warner Bros. months after Albert Hughes dropped out of the director’s chair. Is this good news for diehard fans of Katsuhiro Otomo’s cyberpunk saga? What if the front runner to play Kaneda is Tron: Legacy’s Garrett Hedlund? Variety has the scoop on how Akira bounced back to life; it will reportedly begin filming in the spring under Unknown director Jaume Collet-Serra: …it came down to a meeting between creative and studio execs last week to discuss the new budget — and by the looks of things, they were happy with what they saw (the project had originally been over $100 million, but at one point was brought down to something closer to $90 large). Another piece of news to come out of those meetings: one of the first actors expected to receive an offer for one of the male leads is Tron: Legacy star Garrett Hedlund. Hedlund was one of a number of young actors rumored to be on the shortlist for the Akira lead months ago, and the production is expected to make a formal offer now that they’ve got the green light. Does Hedlund look anything like the famous anime/manga character? Well no, for obvious reasons. WB’s going with “colorblind” casting here (more on that potential storm of controversy when the cast is confirmed), but you know what? If it’s Hedlund — who’s sedately action hero-ish in Tron: Legacy but downright irresistible in Country Strong, and if you’ve seen it, you know what I mean — I’m totally okay with it. Stephen Gaghan Concentrates On Smuggling Of Cocaine And Human For Next Two Films
EXCLUSIVE: Stephen Gaghan provides his next two pointing projects, one since the smuggling of cocaine from Mexico, another human cargo from China. Gaghan, who last directed Syriana, makes an offer with Warner Bros to have an untitled Cartel Project and that he makes an offer with Torch Pictures to direct a completely independent drama in line with the book The Snakehead: A Legendary Tale From The Chinatown Underworld And Also The American Dream. The second may be the title of the book by NYer author Patrick Keefe it will likely be Keefe who creates the script for that Cartel project at Warner Bros. Gaghans Without supervision Shingle is creating the Cartel project together with Kevin McCormacks Langley Park. The Warner Bros film is going to be partially according to Richard Marosis four-part series released within the La Occasions this summer time, about how exactly a comprehensive DEA wiretap operation cracked a number of smuggling rings moving a lot of cocaine from Sinaloa, Mexico, into La after which across the nation. Individuals techniques incorporated loading cocaine into from cars with elaborate hidden compartments to small planes and tractor trailers included in pallets of frozen chicken. The wiretaps elicited highly private information on smugglers, including one that wouldn't take action with no advice of the psychic. It’s the 2nd project McCormick provides from newspaper sources Warner Bros is within production using the Ruben Fleischer-directed Gangster Squad with Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin and Emma Stone. The studio sees this like a star-driven crime drama that's The Departed meets an up-to-date Traffic. Gaghan won an Academy Award for scripting the second Steven Soderbergh-directed 2000 film, which highlighted the futility of Americas fight against drugs within the the nineteen nineties. Marosis confirming indicated not really a lot has transformed. The wiretap operation brought to busts and also the seizure of 1000's of pounds of cocaine but barely dinged up a secret economy worth over $50 billion yearly. Keefe, who scripted Marauders for Jerry Bruckheimer, spent the this past year connected to the Assistant Secretary of Defense in the Government centered on drug enforcement and security issues. Illegal drugs have fallen behind the fight against terror, but that simply means the enormous business of addiction is quieter, Gaghan explained. Police force makes great strides breaking through the cartels, however when you are producing $50 billion in untaxed earnings, you'll be able to buy lots of sources and also the cartels are simply as busy breaking through the interdiction side. You will find systems from coast to coast just like a lung system for illegal drugs that exist in a town in the usa. When a system of demand is really deeply permeated in to the heart of the country, it might be a war with human instinct. After Traffic I felt there is money allocated to interdiction and never enough on treatment, and that i still feel you need to alter the consumption engine in human behavior. In Snakehead, Gaghan will target the unlikely kingpin within an entirely different but lucrative smuggling network. Sister Ping, a grandmother who operated a little noodle shop on Hester Street, headed a multimillion-dollar operation by which she smuggled illegal immigrants from China. They'd disappear within the subterranean Chinatown economy, working endless hrs to repay $18,000 transport costs for a bit of the American dream. Sister Ping made over $100 million within the eighties and would be a Don Corleone within the closed community of Chinatown, until government bodies grew to become smart to her empire in 1993 whenever a ship packed with 300 undocumented immigrants went aground off a seaside in Queens. An FBI task pressure referred to as Jade Squad spent the following decade untangling the network and chasing after its elusive leader, who got a 35-year prison sentence. The film is going to be scripted by Nic Pizzolatto, who authored the novel Galveston and 2 instances of AMCs The Killing. Gaghan is creating with Richard Brown. Development is going to be funded by Torch Pictures, whose principals Allyn Stewart and Kipp Nelson will even produce. Gaghan stated that Snakehead will target the intersection of Sister Ping’s empire with youthful Chinatown gangsters who wanted in once they recognized how lucrative her smuggling business was. Gaghan does not take a look at Sister Ping like a villain, observing the grandchildren of a number of individuals illegal immigrants recognized their parents’ dreams and grew to become doctors. You will find statues of her in China. The storyline is pertinent today, he stated. Humans are tribal but we migrate, and also the forces driving which are hunger and chance, and today we're all those moving for jobs. Gaghan’s intention would be to result in the Cartel project first.

Rob Kravitz/FilmMagic/Getty Images Syl Manley, a respected music artist who created many effective blues and soul tunes inside the sixties and seventies, has filed a suit against hiphop celebs Kanye and Jay-Z over an allegedly uncleared sample round the duo's latest album, Watch the Throne.our editor recommendsTop 10 Finest Paid out Music ArtistsHow Jay-Z and Kanye Beat the Leakers With 'Watch the Throne'Jay-Z and Kanye West's 'Watch the Throne': Track-by-Track In the complaint filed in Illinois federal court on Friday, Manley claims the two famous stylish hop artists plus UMG and Def Jam needed his song, "Different Strokes," attempted around the extender around the song entitled "The Pleasure," and released it in August without his permission and without giving him any credit or payment. PHOTOS: Top Finest Paid out Artists Manley states that West initially preferred to take advantage from the sample for his or her own solo album entitled My Beautiful Dark Twisted Family, however the defendant was unable to acquire permission throughout time of release. After failure to apparent a license for your sample on one album, West's standby time with the sample on another album without permission is mentioned being among knowing and willful misappropriation. Over time, many elder musical artists are becoming sensitive about illegal sampling from newer functions, and handful of artists are actually as litigious relating to this score as Manley, which has brought to a legal court, among others, Michael Jackson, Jefferson Plane and Cypress Hill. He's also effectively become other artists, from Wu Tang Clan to Kid Rock, to pay back for use of samples. In August, when Watch the Throne was released, Manley's label, the Numero Uno Group, was quick to suggest with this legal success, writing on its blog, "20 years and several law suits later, Syl Manley can be a veteran of copyright breach cases, and contains done perfectly for themselves clearing samples from his fertile catalog...for use in a number of tracks...Island Def Jam seems to think about that Syl doesn't have fight left in him.
