And she won!Survivor's Jeff Probst: How I would win the game"It was a very quiet game you played. What was the key?" host Jeff Probst asked her during the live finale Sunday."I think that right away I started sussing people out," she answered. I just worked within that ... and got to the end."Clarke may very well be $1 million richer, but she says the game itself is what's affected her the most. Carlos Alvarez/Getty Images Thelegal dispute betweenGossip GirlstarLeighton Meesterand her mother appears to be over. What started out as a battle over the alleged misuse of the actress' money, and then turned into a dispute over whether Constance Meester deserved compensation for a purported role in helping guide her daughter's career, has suddenly made an abrupt halt. The holidays might be a little less rancorous for the Meester family this year after a judge last week accepted Constance's decision to bow down. As a result, Leighton is being allowed to obtain a default judgment against her mother.our editor recommendsInside the Strange Legal Battle Between 'Gossip Girl' Star Leighton Meester and Her Mother (Analysis)Former 'Gossip Girl' Intern Progressing After Losing Hand in Propeller Accident (Video)'Chuck,' 'Gossip Girl' EPs Adapting UK TV Hit, 'Misfits''Gossip Girl,' 'Vampire Diaries' Go to Netflix Under Four-Year Streaming Licensing Deal with CW PHOTOS: The CW's Fall Premiere Party As you'll recall, Leighton Meester first sued her mother in Los Angeles Superior Court in July. In the original complaint, Leighton said that she had sent her mother $7,500 each month to help with her brother's medical expenses, but that Constance had used the money for cosmetic procedures, including plastic surgery, hair extensions and Botox. A few days later, Constance hit back with counterclaims totaling $3 million in damages. Mommy Meester claimed that she had "sacrificed her happiness" to support Leighton's acting career and that her daughter had breached various management, support, and settlement agreements. The money that was being sent her way was contractually owed, according to Constance. Specifically, Constance argued that she was the president of Intentional Productions, Inc., which rendered Leighton's acting services. She noted her signature was on documents that established the company. Additionally, Constance told of an oral agreement that she had made with Leighton's attorney, Marty Singer, to testify in prior litigation between the actress and her former talent agency, Abrams Artist Agency. For her testimony, Constance alleged that she was promised $10,000 per month in support payments. PHOTOS: The CW's New Fall TV Shows In August, the daughter filed a demurrer that ridiculed her mother's claims. Leighton said that IPI was merely a "loan-out" company for employment purposes and wasn't indicative that Constance was playing the role of manager. TheGossip Girlstar also said that the supposed oral contract made by Singer was void because it's illegal to bargain for testimony to win a lawsuit. Finally, daughter said that mother couldn't sue for "dependent adult financial abuse" because if it was really the case that the traditional mother-daughter roles had been flipped, Constance would require a guardian to sue on her behalf. Constance has now backed off. Last month, her attorneys told the court that Constance no longer wishes to defend against Leighton's claims. The mother also submitted a motion to withdraw her Answer and all the claims alleging how she had sacrificed her happiness for Leighton's good. On Wednesday, a judge made an order striking Constance's answer to the lawsuit and letting Leighton obtain a default judgement. In Leighton's' original lawsuit, the actress sought a declaration there was no contractual relationship between the parties. The mother will soon no longer be able to claim any of those Gossip Girl riches. Switzerlands Copyright Law To Remain In Neutral, Surprising Anti-Piracy Groups
With different new set of the impact of unauthorized downloads, Europe appears to become saying “if it ain’t broke, don’t repair it.” The research, launched through the Federal Department of Justice and Police, has came to the conclusion that piracy does not have an adverse economic effect on the country and suggests the current legislation, which enables for copyrighted material to become downloaded for private use, is enough. Chris Marcich, leader from the Film Association, Europe, informs me it’s an unexpected and disappointing result. In the analysis (simply with different year-old Nederlander study since the marketplaces offer a similar experience), a federal council discovered that as much as one-third of Swiss older than 15 download movies, music and games free of charge which most don't separate downloads which are legal and individuals that aren't. Most compelling for that authors from the study, however, seems to become that customers of file-discussing sites continue to be investing cash on entertainment and also the savings they realize by installing free submissions are consequently being allocated to movie tickets and games. As the council thinks that it's particularly the large foreign production companies who are suffering from — and will need to adjust to — new consumer habits, it does not believe these downloads may have an adverse effect on Switzerlands own cultural output. Marcich states, “It’s troubling to allow them to apparently base their conclusion on that kind of reasoning. The phenomenon affects all nations.” Local film and music producer Adriano Vigano can also be a lawyer for that countrys anti-piracy association and informs me: The Swiss government states it is not so concerned about piracy since it only affects foreign rightsholders. Thats a hostile statement. Especially, he notes, since foreign films have about 95% share of the market in Europe. Anti-piracy groups, political figures and artists are mobilizing to find the government to gather more data, states Vigano.

Washington fetes five
Kennedy Center hailed, clockwise from top left, Yo-Yo Ma, Meryl Streep, Neil Diamond, Barbara Cook and Sonny Rollins with a series of events.
The nation's capital embraced five titans of the performing arts Sunday night at the 34th annual Kennedy Center Honors, this city's premiere gathering of political and entertainment nobility. Actor Meryl Streep, jazz legend Sonny Rollins, pop icon Neil Diamond, singer/thesp Barbara Cook and cellist Yo-Yo Ma were celebrated in a typically energetic affair that will be broadcast on CBS Dec. 27.As usual, the production at the center's Concert Hall and following gala capped a busy weekend for honorees that included a White House reception, a dinner at the U.S. State Department and other events. Honorees watching from the presidential box alongside President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama were treated to segments on each that featured film biographies and entertainment by artists whose identities remained a closely guarded secret. The salute to Streep kicked off the affair, hosted by chum Tracey Ullman. Among colleagues who sang her praises were director Mike Nichols and actors Robert DeNiro, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, Kevin Kline and Stanley Tucci. The Honors event ended a busy week in D.C. for Streep, who earlier met with numerous female members of Congress to campaign for a National Woman's History Museum and screened her new film, "The Iron Lady."Nichols, who directed Streep in "Silkwood," "Postcards From the Edge," "Heartburn" and "Angels in America," marveled at her ability to envelop her characters. "She can handle any part thrown at her except maybe Gidget," he said. "She's the definition of versatility, which makes her a nightmare as a dinner partner. One night I was sitting next to Tess of the D'Ubervilles. On another, Eva Braun. Who will she be tonight? A winner definitely."The tribute to saxophonist Sonny Rollins, hosted by former honoree Bill Cosby, included an exceptional array of jazz greats. They included pianist/composer/band leader Herbie Hancock, sax players Benny Golson and Jimmy Heath, drummer Jack DeJohnette and bassist Christian McBride. A second combo featured saxophonists Joe Lovano and Ravi Coltrane, drummer Billy Drummond and bassist Christian McBride. An equally impressive talent lineup saluted singer Cook, the former Broadway ingenue ("Candide," "The Music Man") who continues to perform at age 84. The tribute led by Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick included entertainers Glenn Close, Patti LuPone, Audra McDonald, Laura Osnes, Sutton Foster, Kelli O'Hara and Rebecca Luker. As expected, The segment for singer/composer Diamond, hosted by John Lithgow, featured a rousing medley of hits. Led by the Rob Mathes Band, participants included Smokey Robinson, Lionel Richie, Jennifer Nettles and The Sweet Carolines. The tribute to cellist Ma ended the show in decidedly unpredictable fashion. It began with a light-hearted tribute by comedian Stephen Colbert and finished with a collage of musical genres emceed by Muppet Elmo (Kevin Clash), in a setting dubbed "Yo-Yo's Playground."The segment was aimed at demonstrating the remarkable versatility of the musical genius and tireless educator. Following a performance of Schuman's "Piano Quintet in E-flat major, Op 44" by an all-star ensemble, composer and former honoree John Williams conducted an assembly of musical groups that included bluegrass and Ma's Silk Road Project. A rousing finale featured singer James Taylor performing a choir-backed "Here Comes the Sun."In its third decade, the Kennedy Center Honors continues to impress both in the consistency of its anointed honorees and participating talent, and its status as this city's hottest ticket for audiences, artists and politicos.Perhaps even more impressive is the longevity of the Honors weekend as a Stevens family affair. It was George Stevens Jr. who first conjured up the idea of the annual awards fund-raiser and who has produced it ever since with colleagues that now include son Michael. It remains a perfect fit for the flexible impresario able to leverage unique ties to Hollywood and D.C.Yet as Stevens honchos the Honors production with longtime partner CBS, his wife Liz has overseen since day one an equally revered event - the previous evening's private dinner for some 200 artists, donors and honorees past and present at the State Department's posh diplomatic reception rooms hosted by the U.S. Secretary of State. It's an unenviable task for some poor Kennedy Center official to say, "sorry," each year to VIPs who simply can't be accommodated."You're not just the 1 percent for getting in this room tonight, you're the .0001 percent," said Kennedy Center Chairman David Rubenstein. "So congratulate yourself for getting invited to this dinner." He wasn't kidding. Among attendees was Russian philanthropist Vladimir Potanin, who had just donated $5 million to the Kennedy Center.Honorees receive their festive ribbons in tableside ceremonies following the dinner. On hand were Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who dashed back to D.C. between diplomatic missions to attend the event. She was accompanied by her husband, former President Bill Clinton, a not-so-renowned sax player who personally offered the evening's tribute to "colleague" Rollins.Singer Renee Fleming emceed the after-dinner remarks, noting that each of this year's honorees are "still at the top of their games." Singer Audra McDonald praised Cook for being a "selfless mentor to me and many others," while songwriter Alan Bergman saluted honoree Diamond. Actor Bill Irwin extemporized about honoree Ma. "He's not only an extraordinary experimenter, he's a stud muffin," he said.Writer/director Nora Ephron ended her effusive praise for honoree Streep with the evening's best line. "I'm sorry to tell you this, Madame Secretary," she said to Clinton after listing Streep's impressive resume of important female roles. "When you met with her tonight, and I imagine you thought she was charming, she was just soaking you up. Someday, you will see her in a movie about your life and discover the mortifying truth that she is better at you than you are." Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com
The Most Popular TV Origin Tales
Michael C. Hall , Tom Welling On Sunday, Syfy will fly audiences to Neverland having a two-evening miniseries that explores how Peter Pan (Charlie Rowe), Captain Hook (Rhys Ifans), and Neverland itself found be. Hollywood's never been afraid to inform a great origin story - for better (Batman Starts, X-Males Top Class) or worse (the 3 The Exorcist prequels, Hannibal Rising) - and also the trend is equally as popular around the small screen. Behold, a lot of our favorite TV origin tales:1. Clark Kent, SmallvilleAt 10 seasons lengthy, this series about Superman's upbringing among humans is possibly a long origin story ever. Carrying out a strict "no tights, no plane tickets" rule, the series started as search for a higher school-aged Clark Kent who struggles to be prepared for his alien roots and superhuman capabilities in Smallville, Kansas. During the period of the show, bits of the Superman mythology fell into position: Clark visited work on The Daily Planet, other Electricity Comics heroes and villains put their hands up, and Clark (finally!) wound up with Lois Lane. And, yes, in the series' finish, Clark eventually donned the Super-suit and required his first official flight because the Guy of Steel.2. Dexter Morgan, DexterAlthough it had been revealed more like a general mythology, Dexter Morgan's bloody backstory is vital to understanding his serial-killing ways. Orphaned at age 3 after his mother's murder, Dexter was discovered inside a pool of bloodstream by officer and eventual adoptive father Harry Morgan. Realizing Dexter's penchant for killing neighborhood pets, Harry reined in Dexter's "Dark Passenger" by teaching him "The Code." The short version: Killing is awesome, as lengthy because the body's responsible for his very own serious crimes. That is probably not the very best raising a child, but it is provided us with several seasons of scrumptious drama. So thanks, Harry! 3. Gustavo Fring, Breaking BadIn Season 4's "Hermanos," we finally discover why Gus is really darned hostile toward the cartel: They wiped out hispartner (lover?)Max. Inside a tense, taut, all-in-The spanish language flashback to eighties Mexico, we learn that Gus and Max started cooking meth quietly in order to partner track of the cartel. However when Don Eladio does not agree to their subterranean shenanigans and since Gus is in some way "connected" in Chile, Max will get shot within the mind and Gus needs to look at his partner bleed to dying. His Chilean connection opted for him towards the grave, but a minimum of we all know how Gus grew to become probably the most callous meth kingpin/chicken guy from the Southwest.4. Mr. Eko, LostOn a show where everyone were built with a crazy backstory, Mr. Eko's was one of the more interesting. A number of flashbacks says a youthful Eko wiped out a guy to safeguard his brother Yemi in the same fate whenever a gang of guerrillas terrorize his Nigerian village. The gang recruits Eko, who returns home years later like a courageous drug the almighty to request pressure Yemi, that has since be a priest, to assist him smuggle heroin in Virgin Mary statues. Throughout the operation, Yemi is shot because the plane will take off and Eko, who's outfitted like a priest, is mistaken for his brother. He is constantly on the function as the village priest from guilt. No surprise the man does not talk much!5. Noah "HRG" Bennett, HeroesLate in the first season, Heroes abandoned its multi-story format to pay attention to just one character: Noah "HRG" Bennett. As they and the family are held hostage at their Texas home, the show flashes-to HRG's recruitment by Primatech, his adoption of Claire, and the (presumed) murder of his former partner Claude. Even though episode strengthened that HRG was confident with the morally grey areas, it mostly demonstrated what lengths HRG visits safeguard his "Claire Bear," whose forces he'd stored secret from the organization from fear they would take her away. All of a sudden, all his evil functions did not appear so evil - particularly when he sacrificed themself to ensure that Claire could escape.6. Olivia Dunham, FringeAlthough Fringe's first season says Olivia used to be one of the 30 children Walter and William Bell accustomed to test the drug Cortexiphan, it had not been until Season 2's "The city of jacksonville" that people learned the implications of individuals tests. Facing the threat that certain from the structures within this universe's NY will quickly be ripped to the alternate world, Walter discloses that Olivia had the energy to find out which objects did not belong here simply because they glimmered. After a number of unsuccessful tests, Olivia finally regains the energy over time in order to save the ordinary people for the reason that business building. But more to the point, she starts to see that Peter also offers the tell-tale glimmer, which, coincidentally, teed up another origin story! What exactly are your faves?
